Our paper to HICSS 2009 was accepted. This is a work specification and verification of automated identification and data capturing (AIDC). I worked with Prof. Elsa Gunter, Prof. Carl Gunter and Ayesha Yasmeen. My main job was to develop a system which aggregate automated in-patient identification and automated data capturing of medical data. We proved that this system could detect many common medical errors which, if left unnoticed, can lead to serious consequences such as injuries of even deaths. This includes wrong patient, wrong treatment, wrong appoinment, usage of broken devices, etc...

This is my first accepted paper, so congragutalions to myself :)

Below is the introduction of the paper:

"Humans use computers to carry out tasks that neither is able to do easily alone: humans provide eyes, hands, and judgment while computers provide computation, networking, and storage. This symbiosis is especially evident in workflows where humans identify objects using bar codes or RFID tags and capture data about them for the computer. This Automated Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) is increasingly important in areas such as inventory systems and health care. Humans involved in AIDC follow simple rules and rely on the computer to catch mistakes; in complex situations this reliance can lead to mismatches between human workflows and system programming. In this paper we explore the design, implementation and formal modeling of AIDC for vital signs measurements in hospitals. To this end we describe the design of a wireless mobile medical mediator device that mediates between identifications, measurements, and updates of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). We implement this as a system Med2 that uses PDAs equipped with Bluetooth, WiFi, and RFID wireless capabilities. Using Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) we jointly specify workflow and computer system operations and provide a formal analysis of the protections the system provides for user errors."

VEFF-HUT library

Dear friends,

I would like to share with you some news on a recent event which I participate in organizing - the opening ceremony of the HUT - VEFFA library. It was held in June the 12nd at Hanoi University of Technology (HUT), Hanoi, Vietnam. The library opening event received huge attention from the Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology (MOSTE), HUT’s faculty and students, as well as from the media.

Vice Minister Tran Quang Thang of MOST; Professor Vo Van Toi, director of the Vietnam Education Foundation; HUT’s Vice Rector Prof. Nguyen Trong Giang and VEFFA former president Nguyen Viet Hung, current VEFFA Representative Tran Viet Hung attended and gave their speeches at the ceremony. Attendees at the ceremony are also a special representative from Vinh University (Vietnam); the VEFFA members who are in Hanoi, as well as the HUT’s students.

This is the direct result of VEFFA's 2007 VnBookDrive campaign, in which we collected more than 1000 college-level science and engineering textbooks from the US and transported them to Vietnam. They will be made available to Vietnamese students and researchers at HUT and other universities through HUT's library system.

Our 2008 campaign has started, aiming to double the number of books collected. If you have books to donate, please contact me at anguyen?@uiuc.edu (? = 7) or visit the project's website for more information.

Thank you!

This is some interesting research from the folks at Princeton in which they show that DRAM retains data after the computer has been powered off. Taking advantage of this, and the fact that disk encryption key is stored in memory, they can plugin a usb drive while your computer is on (even in locked or sleep mode), boot their OS stored in the usb drive, dump your memory, and steal your disk encryption key which resides on DRAM.

This attack is hard to defend in the sense that it takes advantage of a physical characteristic of DRAM: the content is not erased immediately after the memory chip  is powered off. You can not rely on the OS to do the erasing job because the attacker can turn off the machine by unplugging power cable. Also, the disk encryption key must reside in memory in order to be used.

The best defense mechanism that I can think of now is to store disk encryption key in a memory location which will be erased right after the machine is booted up... some location that will be used temporary by BIOS for example.

The UIUC engineering open house is happening today and tomorrow with a lot of cool stuffs...

The robot contests and lightning music-show is very cool. If you happen to be in Urbana Champaign area at this time, you should come and check them out.

Here is a video preview:

Siebel Center Hallway

Hi there,

Welcome to my personal homepage!

My name is Anh Nguyen. I am a second year grad student (as of Aug 2008) at the Computer Science Department - University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and a current member of Illinois Security Lab. I am researching (or at least trying to research on) Information Security, and my current adviser is Prof. Carl Gunter. The picture above is the hallway of the Siebel Center, where I have an office in.

I am a Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) fellow, and currently a member of Vietnam Education Fellows and Scholars Association's (VEFFA) Board of Representative.

Before coming here I finished my undergrad at Hanoi University of Technology - Faculty of Information Technology in 2006. I then worked full time as Deputy Manager - AntiVirus Dept - Bach Khoa Internetwork Center until June, 2007. I came to Urbana Champaign in August, 2007 to pursue my graduate study at UIUC. To tell the truth, I don't like going to school, but I have done that for nearly years, and I am stilling doing it (wish me luck).

As you can easily see, it is under construction right now, so you will not find many useful information at the moment. But please come back soon, and I promise that this site would be much more interesting Laughing

This is an attempt to replace my old pure, static, html homepage, which is kind of boring. Hopefully, in the near future, you will be able to use this new site to do either one (or any combination) of these things:

  • get to know me better: I am a simple person, but even a simple person is very complicated. If you are working with me, or want to work with me then we should get to know each others' values and working method. I truly believe that knowing your parter will make the job much easier.
  • relax: I will occasionally write something funny, or put some relaxing stuff that I find on this website. Some people say I have a good sense of humor, and I do believe that (also I did not practice it very often, but this is my chance rite :D)
  • and maybe, just maybe, learn something new: I will again, occasionally, write about my experience in cooking, researching, studying,... and whatever. I am a pretty open type of person, and I tend to feel happy sharing my experience to the ones who need it. Usually, I will share it as soon as I experience with, because otherwise I will forget it right away Frown (my memory is quite bad).

Also, if you have any comments, either on the content, or the outlook of this site, or anything related to me myself.. please feel free to contact me by writing your comments here.

Thanks for visiting, and have a nice day !

Anh
